This Has To Stop

by dpreyde

Hey, have you seen that viral post on your favourite social media site in which a kindly able-bodied person assists some hapless disabled person, thus proving that the world is a gentle and tolerant place?

Me, too! A million fucking times! Because variations of this tired fucking trope keep getting posted again and again and again.

You get to see pathetic, worn-out disabled people getting spoon-fed in a McDonald’s! Or in a food court! Or getting their hand held in a bus!

This shit never ends, and I am sick and fucking tired of it.

Every time it happens- every goddamn time- I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, because normally reasonable, intelligent people post this shit and explain how inspirational it is.

And these are people who would never buy into inspiration porn most of the time, because they know it’s dehumanizing. They know it’s othering. They know it doesn’t portray a true experience of disability.

But the minute they see some photo of a poor cripple getting led across the street by a clean-cut white boy, they cream their jeans.

These viral posts make disabled people into objects of pity, and turn us into teachable moments. Disabled people do not exist to give you an opportunity to demonstrate what an amazing person you are. We don’t need your pity.

You know what we need?

Money. We need money to hire people to give us assistance so we don’t have to rely on the kindness of strangers who are going to turn around and make us into a fucking meme and talk to the media about how their mommies always told them to be nice to cripples.

I know it’s not sexy, but we need comprehensive social services so we have a decent quality of life. We need and deserve dignity.

And we need you to stop posting this shit.
